Anthem is a part of 2 of the biggest families in health insurance: WellPoint and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. Together with WellPoint, Anthem provides health insurance for over 34 million Americans nationwide.
Anthem provides a variety of health insurance plans along with life, dental, disability insurance, and prescription drug coverage.
Anthem’s mission is improving their members’ health. That’s why their plans emphasize preventive care — providing coverage for doctor’s check-ups and routine physicals to help make sure their members stay healthy.
And with a large network of doctors and hospitals, members always have convenient access to care.
They also provide information and programs for managing chronic illnesses such as asthma and diabetes.
Anthem became a Blue Cross Blue Shield member in 1944. Today, they’re one of many independent companies in the BCBS Association.
Anthem operated independently for over 60 years, then merged with WellPoint Health Networks in 2005.
WellPoint was created in 1986 as the manager of health care operations for the non-profit insurer, Blue Cross of California. After WellPoint became their own insurance company and acquired Anthem, they became WellPoint Incorporated.
They are headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Now, as one of the nation’s largest health insurance providers, Anthem and WellPoint is focused on healthy living and providing affordable access to health care.
Their managed care plans organize networks of thousands of doctors, hospitals, specialists, and clinics all across the country. Anthem and WellPoint also support the use of evidence-based medicine to continue improving the quality of care and reduce medical errors.
Anthem and WellPoint work closely with United Way’s Associate Giving Campaign — helping the homeless, protecting the environment, preserving the arts and culture, and contributing to children’s education.
They also accept requests for charitable donations to non-profit organizations for any health-related, educational, or community project.
WellPoint and Anthem’s business have all “A’s” from the most renowned rating companies.
A.M. Best gave them an “A (Excellent),” Standard and Poor’s issued an “A+ (Strong)” rating, Moody’s Investor Service Inc. assigned an “A1 (Good)” rating, and Fitch Inc. rated WellPoint and Anthem “AA- (Excellent).”
