Alabama ranks higher for health determinants than for health outcomes, indicating that overall healthiness should improve over time.
Challenges: Challenges include a high prevalence of obesity at 30.5 percent of the population, a high premature death rate with 10,106 years of potential life lost before age 75 per 100,000 population, a high rate of deaths from cardiovascular disease at 377.4 deaths per 100,000 population and a low high school graduation rate with 65.0 percent of incoming ninth graders who graduate within four years.
